Go Red For Women® is a critical component of the American Heart Association’s mission to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives. This year-round movement harnesses the energy, passion, and power women have to band together to collectively wipe out heart disease.
1 in 3 women die of heart disease or stroke, but approximately 80% of these deaths are preventable with awareness and simple lifestyle choices. Through corporate and community-based partnerships, volunteer leadership, individual donors, and survivors, Go Red For Women® unites women of all generations and ethnicities to recognize their risk of heart disease, create lasting change in their health, become lifesavers through educating others, and ultimately save lives.
Cardiovascular diseases are most often associated with men and historically, men have been the subjects of research to understand heart disease. This research is the foundation of most treatment guidelines and programs – to the detriment of women. Go Red For Women® strives to alter this perception because more women die of heart disease than men.
Only 55% of women know heart disease is their #1 killer and less than half know what are considered healthy levels for cardiovascular risk factors like blood pressure and cholesterol. The Go Red For Women® movement works to make sure women know their risk so they can take action to protect their health.
Too many women die of heart disease. Together, we can shift the perception to save lives. Make it your mission to speak up and join the movement here in Westchester County!
